Back in 1986, a group of six players gathered at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island every Wednesday morning. Their mission? To skate, pass the puck, remain active, and relive the glory days for an hour.
The only requirement to join? Each skater had to be sixty years or older. The roll call of past and present members reads like a who’s-who of Rhode Island hockey. Tom Eccleston, a renowned coach at the high school and college levels, left an indelible mark. Rollie and Gig Pariseau left their legacy in high school athletics. The Oldies participated in local hockey tournaments, securing their fair share of victories. Other esteemed players who graced the ice with the Oldies included Don Sennot, Rene Hall, Duke Costine, Dick Ernst, Buster Clegg, Don Hebert, Clarence Pratt, Alan Soares, Peter Teirnan, Richard Cappalli, George Lang, Colby Cameron, Charlie Sample, Jack Lawton, and Earl Viau.
From the very beginning, the organization’s rules were straightforward: while hockey is a contact sport, any body-checking must be unintentional. Good sportsmanship is an unwavering principle upheld by every skater. The Oldies take pride in their commitment to the community, providing financial support to Special Olympics and local food banks in Pawtucket and Smithfield. Additionally, they offer annual scholarship awards to young male and female hockey players in Smithfield, and continue to make contributions to The Providence Journal Christmas funds.
Currently, the roster boasts around 40 active skaters, while another 20 to 30 members have gracefully retired their skates. We gather at the Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink every Wednesday and Friday morning, thanks to the generous support of the rink manager. Moreover, some of our members also participate in Monday morning skates with a diverse group formed by former members of the Providence Lady Reds, creating a true “family hockey” atmosphere.
The Rhody Oldies bring together a diverse range of skills and professions, bonded by an unwavering love for the game of hockey. We are always eager to welcome new members to our ranks. Whether you're a seasoned player or looking to dust off your old gear, we invite you to join us and become part of our thriving community.
Mark your calendars for our annual banquet in May, where we celebrate our accomplishments, and don't miss our annual membership meeting held every October.
The Rhody Oldies Hockey Club is where the passion for hockey never fades, and the memories on the ice last a lifetime.
